Solmsen, Friedrich Heinrich Rudolph (04 February 1904–30 January 1989), classical philologist, was born in Bonn, Germany, the son of Felix Solmsen, a renowned Indo-European philologist, and Lily Brach. His father died by his own hand when Friedrich was only seven, leaving his mother to raise him on her own. He studied classical philology at Bonn (1922), Heidelberg (1924), and Berlin, where he received his Ph.D. in 1928.
