Abel studied under Bonnefond at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons and later under Léon Cogniet. He exhibited in Lyons in 1866 and Paris from 1857 to 1870, mainly historical and religious canvases and portraits in sketched or painted form. From 1866, Abel taught drawing
