Having followed Jean Delvin's courses at the art academy in Ghent, Robert Aerens moved to Laethem with Frits van den Berghe, before marrying the writer Éliza Verwest in 1910. He made many trips to France, Italy and Switzerland, before becoming a professor at the art academy in Ghent.
