Because both his father, Louis-Jean Allais, and his mother (née Briceau) were engravers, Jean-Alexandre learned the technique while very young. He had a broader vision, however, and sought further inspiration from Jacques-Louis David (for composition) and from Urbain Massard and Fossoyeux (for engraving techniques).
