Guillaume Apollinaire was the illegitimate son of a Polish mother, Angélique-Alexandrine Kostrowitzky, and an Italian father, Francesco Flugi d'Aspermont, a former officer in the Royal Army of Sicily. Apollinaire studied in Monaco, Nice and Paris, and in 1902 he began writing for a number of publications,
