A student of the Florentine painter B. Luti, in 1766 Claude Arnulphi was appointed as teacher at the École de Dessin d'Aix by the duke of Villars, who was the governor of Provence. By this time, Arnulphi had already produced a large number of portraits, notably The Marquis of Vauvenargues;
