Georges Autard was a teacher of mathematics before he began painting in 1975. The art of Claude Viallat encouraged his pictorial experimentation. Evidence of his initial mathematical training can be seen in canvases that show signs, writing and, more rarely, numbers against a dark background like a blackboard, enabling him to tell 'stories'.
