Nathaniel Bacon was the grandson of Sir Nicholas Bacon, the Lord Keeper under Queen Elizabeth I. He was made a knight by Charles I in 1625. He visited the Low Countries in 1613 and his few surviving works show Dutch influences: it is possible that he studied painters of the Utrecht School.
