Baehr was a pupil at the Dresden and St Matthew's academies. During visits to Italy in 1827 and 1834, he met Thorvaldsen, J.A. Koch, Cornelius, F. Reinhart and Horace Vernet. In 1837, he settled in Dresden, becoming a professor at the academy there in
