[not available online]Lionello Balestrieri began his studies in Siena before entering Domenico Morelli's workshop in Naples. He started exhibiting in Paris from 1897 onwards, and in 1900 was awarded a gold medal for his now-celebrated portrait of Beethoven, a work subsequently exhibited in various European cities
