Barbantan specialised in religious painting, executing works in fresco, wax and tempera for the churches of St-Michel-de-Frigolet, St-Vincent-de-Paul in Marseilles and St-Pierre in Avignon. He decorated the chapel of St-Antoine in the latter church in 1886, returning there in 1887 to decorate the chapel of St-Joseph with seven
