Léon Barotte was a pupil of Zuber and Larteau. He painted landscapes excelling at the depiction of trees, and the patterns created by their roots and curving branches.

He was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français from 1912 and exhibited his landscapes, particularly views of his birthplace, including
