Martin Barré studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes from 1939 to 1943. He settled in Paris in 1948 and from this date began painting in a non-figurative style. At the time lyrical or gestural abstraction, with an emphasis on impasto, was emerging in reaction to the prevailing coldness
