Son of the miniaturist Barrias and brother of the historical painter Félix Joseph Barrias, Louis Ernest Barrias, like his brother, was a disciple of classicism. He studied under Jouffroy, Cavalier and Cogniet at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and won a Prix de Rome
