Cesare Bartolena studied in Florence with Pollastrini and fought as a volunteer in the 1848 War of Italian Independence. Bartolena was essentially a portraitist, although, from 1848 onwards, he also painted battle scenes and other incidents from the 1848 War. In 1872, he exhibited at the
