Marcel-André Baschet was the son of the art publisher Ludovic Baschet. In 1879, he attended the Académie Julian and then studied with Jules Lefèbvre and Gustave Boulanger at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1883.
