Born 1632 or 1633, in Suffolk; died 28 December 1697, in Pall Mall (London), or according to some sources 1699.


Mary Beale was the daughter of a Suffolk clergyman, the Rev. John Craddock. She trained with Robert Walker and was influenced by the portrait painter, Peter Lely. Her husband, Charles Beale, was also a painter and encouraged her by keeping the accounts,
