Rigaud Benoit was a cobbler and taxi driver who taught himself to paint. In common with the other popular Haitian painters at the mid-century, he was discovered in the entourage of the voodoo priest Hector Hyppolite in 1943 by the English teacher Dewitt Peters, who then established the art centre at Port-au-Prince.
