Sven Richard Bergh studied at the academy of fine arts in Stockholm and with J. Perseus. He settled in Paris between 1881 and 1884, and worked under the supervision of Jean-Paul Laurens and Jules Bastien-Lepage. Exhibiting at the Salon from 1883, he won a major prize in 1889
