René Bertrand-Boutée was a pupil of Barrias and later Coutan at the École des Beaux-Arts (1905). He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français (of which he was a member) from 1904-1925, winning a second-class medal in 1906. In 1907, he carved the portrait of the actor Jean Coquelin in the role of Quasimodo.
