Carl von Breda was a pupil of Lorenz Pasch and then Sir Joshua Reynolds. He was court painter in Sweden and owed his reputation mainly to his portraits. He is sometimes nicknamed the Swedish van Dyck. From 1788 to 1796 he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.
