Breling studied with Wilhelm Diez at the Munich academy of art and worked in Munich, Schleissheim and Hanover. He painted scenes from the Thirty Years' War and the Franco-Prussian War, most notably Defending the Cemetery at Beaune-la-Rolande, as well as slightly impressionistic genre
