A student at St Martin's School of Art, Thomas Burgess established his own art school in Maiden's Lane, directing it for a number of years. His work, dating from between 1766 and 1786, was exhibited at the Incorporated Society and the Royal Academy. He was the father of the portrait painter William Burgess.
