Calmels was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts on 2 October 1937, and studied variously under Bosio, Pradier and Blondel. He was awarded silver at the Prix de Rome in 1839 and a bronze in 1852.

Calmels settled in Portugal but sent examples of his work to the Paris
