Jozef Cantre attended the Koninklijke Academie in Ghent and began to sculpt in 1909 under the influence of Constantin Meunier and Georges Minne. He was quick to join the Expressionist movement. He lived in the Netherlands between 1918 and 1930 with Gustave de Smet and Frits van den Berghe. On
