Caran d'Ache studied in Moscow before settling in Paris, where he first worked for the periodical Chronique Parisienne. He also submitted drawings (caricatures) to Vie Parisienne, Rire, Caricature, and the Chat Noir. He produced a shadow play entitled Epic.
