Initially an industrial draughtsman, Étienne Carjat was drawn to the theatre and the literary world in Paris. He emerged as a caricaturist in 1854. In 1856 he founded the periodical Diogenes (Le Diogène), for which he produced witty caricatures based on celebrity photographs
