Karl Cartier studied under Barrias, Gérôme and Carolus Duran at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He made his Paris Salon debut in 1875 and went on to win a gold medal (second class) at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Cartier taught drawing and composition at several schools and colleges in Paris
