Casagemas initially worked with the decorator Félix Urgelles in Barcelona. In 1900 he exhibited at the Quatre Gats, then accompanied Picasso to Paris to visit the Exposition Universelle. Thereafter he met Germaine, of whom he did a striking portrait in charcoal and with whom he had a romantic but tragic love
