[not available online]Giovanni Battista Casanova, elder brother of Francesco Casanova, studied painting in Dresden under Silvestre and Dietrich. He travelled to Rome in 1752, where he was advised by Mengs and perfected his charcoal-drawing technique. He was also a pupil of Piazzetta, in Venice.
