Born 29 September 1833, in Le Mée-sur-Seine (Seine-et-Marne); died 1891, in Paris.

Sculptor, watercolourist, engraver. Statues.

Chapu's parents, both concierges, encouraged him to learn drawing in order to become a tapestry-maker. His evident talent earned him a scholarship, and he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on 9 October 1849, where he studied under Pradier and Duret.
