Claus studied under Auguste Herbin in 1949 and 1950, then went on to follow in his mentor's footsteps by painting classically Abstract Geometric compositions. He exhibited in the 1950s at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris before entering Friedlander's workshop in 1955-1956.
