Cortazzo was a pupil of Bonnat. He worked in Paris, especially for the art dealer Goupil, who commissioned historical paintings from him.

He received an honourable mention at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. He is known for his Old-Time Justice, The Coronation of the Bride
