Bernard Coutant was ordained as a priest in April 1949 and devoted himself fully to painting after his retirement, living with the Petites Sœurs des Pauvres in Saintes. Earlier, in 1941-1942, he had already begun to use paint as a medium of expression and maintained a correspondence with Chaissac.
