Cugnot was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts on 6 April 1854 and his teachers were Diéboldt and Duret. He won the Prix de Rome in 1859 for his painting Wounded Mézence Protected by Lausas. He was awarded medals in 1863, 1865 and 1867. Notable works by him include Corybant Stifling the Cries of
