At the age of 14, Pierre Dedieu began an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker with a restorer of antique furniture. During a long period in New Caledonia, he studied the techniques of Kanac sculpture and African art more generally. His first works, Surrealist in inspiration, date from 1946.
