William Dobson's first master was Robert Peake, a portraitist and art dealer. He was probably also the pupil of Francis Cleyn. During his apprenticeship, he learned to copy Old Masters such as Titian and Van Dyck, which gave him an excellent grounding in colour. Van Dyck noticed one
