Lois Dodd was a pupil at the Cooper Union Art School in New York before continuing her training in Rome between 1949 and 1950. She spent time in Rome on a scholarship in 1959-1960. She lived and worked in New York and in Cushing (Maine) and was a member of the National Academy of Design.
