Théophile Duverger taught himself by studying the great masters in galleries. He showed work at the Paris Salon, gaining third-class medals in 1861 and 1863, and a further medal in 1865.

Duverger's work tends to dwell on the hardships of labour and poverty, as his titles suggest: Tears by the Hearth
