Edgar Fernhout was the grandson of the Symbolist painter Jan Toorop and the son of Expressionist painter Charley Toorop, daughter of Jan. He frequently spent time working in Amsterdam, France and Italy. He started painting at the beginning of the 1930s in Amsterdam, having his first solo exhibition there
