Giovanni Folo studied in his native Bassano under the painters Mengardi and Janotti before going on to study in Rome under Volpato. His early style is somewhat harsh, as exemplified to a degree in his engraving of Raphael's Madonna de Candelabri. That harshness is completely attenuated in his later engraving of
