Jacques Fouquières had very modest origins, even though he wished it to be believed that he belonged to the well-to-do Fuggers family, called Fokkiers in Flanders. According to Juste d'Egmont, his father was a carter. He was the pupil of Velvet Brueghel, as is evidenced by his first works,
