Alphonse François was a pupil of Henriquel-Dupont. He was awarded medals in 1851 and 1857, together with a gold medal of the 1867 Exposition Universelle. He exhibited at the Salon from 1842 to 1880. A talented artist, François was elected to membership of the Institute in 1873 and made an
