Franz Xaver Fuhr was self-taught. He more or less adopted the aesthetic principles of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) group, formed in 1918 around Otto Dix and Georg Grosz, and intended as a reaction against the distortions of Expressionism, though not merely adhering to the strict reproduction
