José Gamarra studied at the school of fine arts in Montevideo. In 1959 he left Uruguay for southern Brazil and in 1963 moved to Paris.
Gamarra originally worked in the area of Latin-American abstract art. He then became heavily influenced by Pop Art, but by the style
