Born 15 February 1831, in Voronezh, of French descent; died 1 June 1894, in Moscow.

Painter, sculptor. Religious subjects, portraits.

Founder member of the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers) group.

Studied mathematics before becoming a pupil of P. Bassin at the academy of fine arts from 1850 to 1857. He won a scholarship to Italy where he became a teacher in 1864. Gay
