Painter, watercolourist, lithographer. History painting, portraits, animals.

Pupil of Alexandre Couder; exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1839 to 1870. Gengembre painted battle scenes and equestrian portraits, invariably in colour. Examples include Equestrian Portrait of Napoleon I, Alma, Waterloo, and Algeria. He also painted numerous lithographed horse studies.
