Born 20 January 1588, in Bologna; died 1649, in Bologna.

Painter. Religious subjects, allegorical subjects, mythological subjects, genre scenes.

Gessi studied under D. Calvaert and Cremonini, then under Guido Reni and emerged as one of the latter's most accomplished pupils, earning him the byname 'the Second Guido'. As a result, Reni entrusted to Gessi completion of several of his own paintings.
