Between 1947 and 1959 Gotthard Graubner attended the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Berlin, the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Dresden, and then, after leaving what at that time was East Germany in 1951, the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. From 1965 to 1969 he taught at the art school in Hamburg, from 1973 to 1976
