Ellen Day Hale was the only daughter of the theologian and writer, Rev. Edward Everett Hale. She was a pupil of Rimmer, W.M. Hunt and Helen M. Knowlton in Boston. She attended classes at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1878 to 1879
